Los Angeles saw the first U.S. performance of Giacomo Puccini’s snow-dusted weeper in 1897 just a year after the young Toscanini led the prima in Turin. LA Opera in its unending, some might say hellbent, quest to engage the company town in the art of the lyric theatre invited film director, former Broadway choreographer and perennial Academy Award nominee Herbert Ross, of Turning Point and Steel Magnolias fame, to stage our latest production of La Bohème way back in 1993. For its sixth revival down at the Music Center, directing duties have now been passed to Peter Kazaras, who had a distinguished career as a character tenor and now leads the opera program at UCLA. For one of the few operas in the repertoire that is practically bulletproof, Mr. Ross’s production nonetheless featured a staging far too fussy in spots for its own good. Mr. Kazaras has now gratefully streamlined it as best he could within the confines (literally) of the sets. In spite of the fact that Bohème is an ensemble opera it does have a slight “boys vs. girls” feeling about it and last night the girls won. In spades. In her LA Opera debut, conductor Speranza Scappucci who led a spirited performance that highlighted the verve and poignancy of the score in equal parts. In possibly one of the busiest and most picturesque orchestrations in the repertoire she kept the orchestra constantly alert and graceful. f she seemed to lack that preternatural talent for anticipating a singer’s every breath she none the less proved an able accompanist to a fresh cast still wet behind their ears and some even singing roles for the first time. The most important of these debuts was Georgian soprano, and LA Opera favorite daughter Nino Machaidze in her first Mimi. For a character suffering the last stages of tuberculosis the composer certainly calls for a soprano with full command of her respiratory functions. Ms. Machaidze has made her name in lyric coloratura roles and just only recently started branching out past Violetta and Juliette into Luisa Miller and now Puccini’s doomed seamstress. Her voice carries easily into the auditorium at any decibel level with a dark core which grandly and vibrantly opens on the top. She nailed all the imposing climaxes just as adeptly as she dazzled in the quiet moments. Her acting was touching and she had a lovely moment where she put a scarf on Rodolfo as they were leaving the garrett that showed her love already in a quiet way. I walked into the theater concerned that Mimi might be pushing things too fast. I left in hopeful anticipation of her first Tosca. I had not seen the last revival of this production in 2012 when Janai Brugger first sang Musetta but my thanks to whomever engaged her again. Flaunting one of the most luscious and seductive voices it has ever been my pleasure to hear, Ms. Brugger tore up the stage at the Cafè Momus in Act II with a performance that should easily assure her gainful employment for the rest of her career. In “Quando m’en vo” she made easy work of the composer’s many markings, never letting the phrases lose their musical shape. Her stage business with the waiters was so hilarious and over the top for a moment I feared we were going to get a Hello, Dolly! kickline. The men were all good but really couldn’t keep up with their brilliant female colleagues. Nicholas Brownlee was generally wonderful as Colline and made a touching farewell to his coat in the last act; toward the end I realized I couldn’t recall the last time he had taken a breath. The most excellent Kihun Yoon was the Schaunard after his recent success here as Sharpless in Butterfly. It’s an especially rich voice and his was luxury casting filling out the ensemble. Our Marcello was Giorgio Caoduro and he’s a lithe, handsome charmer who moved well about the stage. He has a warm natural baritone of some character and blended especially well with Rodolfo in the opening duet of Act IV making it a special moment in spite of an odd staging choice. Guatemalan tenor Mario Chang swept the Operalia competition in 2014 and it’s easy to see why after his performance as Rodolfo. He has the conversational quality in his singing necessary for a Puccini specialist and his voice has a little grain in it which makes it instantly recognizable. His phrasing is also wonderfully expansive when called upon at the big moments. Especially for someone of his young years. He was also very touching in Act III at the Barrier d’Enfer when he was comforting Mimi. That said I have a feeling his “Che gelida manina” in Act I might have gone a tad easier if the director hadn’t banished both he and Ms. Machaidze to their collective knees in the garret. Now, about the improvements on Mr. Ross’ original mounting by Mr. Kazaras: I saw this production last in 2004 and although Mr. Ross had long since gone to his reward his ideas were still with us. Moving the time of the staging forward 50-some years to precisely 1888 gives the Bohemian’s garrett apartment a view of the half constructed Tour Eiffel and to see its further progress in the spring. It also allows for the introduction of bicycles into the proceedings as well as Musetta and Alcindoro’s Act II entrance in a very elegant horseless carriage (i.e. motorcar.) Happily swept away is the entire contrivance of the landlord Benoit and his wife as “visible” downstairs neighbors of the Bohemian quartet and their intrusive pantomimes during Act I which were an unnecessary distraction. Odd was Mr. Ross’s opening Act IV in front of the painted scrim used for the big reveal of the Cafè Momus scene in Act II with Rodolfo and Marcello having “visions” of their lost loves through said scrim during the duet ‘O Mimi, tu piu non torni’. It doesn’t really work and it’s still with us. Act III is played on split levels with Rodolfo and Mimi in the street and Musetta and Marcello in a second story apartment above the tavern for the opening (having sexy time Rear Window style at curtain up) and then during the great quartet. That does work until Musetta drops her valise out of the window to the sidewalk below eliciting laughter from the audience at a superbly timed bit of stage business but obliterating the musical climax of the act. I also have to strenuously object to Marcello “motor-boating” Musetta upon their reunion in Act II. I don’t care how big a laugh it gets, it’s wrong for the period. Peter J. Hall’s costumes once again tip the favor to the ladies with naturally discrete ensembles for Mimi (a forest green dress for Act III was especially flattering) and of course a lot of bright colors and sparkle for Musetta. The men were mostly in grays and browns which makes them sadly blend into the relentlessly gray sets of Gerard Howland on which I will not waste any further space. They do, however, give an excellent backdrop to Duane Schuler’s very skillful lighting design. Yet there’s an absolutely magnificent moment at the end of Act I where Rodolfo and Mimi have found their way down front, the garrett and side buildings pull back out of view, and out pops the biggest Disney moon you’ve ever seen as stage fog creeps across the floor and the lovers sing their final “Amor’s.” Those hoping to hear Puccini’s gentle postlude will strain over the mountainous applause as the curtain falls. Italy has three main symphony orchestras. Two have come to BA in earlier seasons: Milan´s La Scala with Gavazzeni and later with Muti, and that of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with Maazel. And now, to complete the trilogy, the Mozarteum Argentino brought us from Rome the Orchestra dell´Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Sir Antonio Pappano and with Beatrice Rana (piano). All made their local debuts. The three are of high quality and can compete internationally. La Scala´s has a special regime: during Autumn it is a concert orchestra, but come Winter they go to the pit for the operatic season. That of the MMF of course is the basis for the homonymous yearly Festival in which such great names as Bartoletti and Mehta have presented interesting opera programmes, but they also offer many concerts during the year and they are the pit orchestra for the Teatro Comunale´s opera season. The Santa Cecilia, instead, is a concert orchestra with weekly activity from October to June at the magnificent new Parco della Musica. Each concert is given three times. However, it has recently recorded "Aida" with a starry cast (Kaufmann/Harteros/Schrott) and "Madama Butterfly" with Gheorghiu. The Accademia also supports a Chorus, and so the choral-symphonic repertoire often appears during the season. It is the oldest Italian organism dedicated almost exclusively to concert music. It was founded in 1908 as Orchestra dell´Augusteo di Roma. Bernardino Molinari had a long tenure as Principal Conductor from 1912 to 1944. Later the Orchestra was called Santa Cecilia (she is the patroness of music) and had eminent Principal conductors: Fernando Previtali (1953-73), Igor Markevich (1973-5), Giuseppe Sinopoli (1983-7), Daniele Gatti (1992-7), Myung-Whun Chung (1997-2005) and now Pappano. To their appellation they later added Nazionale (I would have thought more adequate to add "di Roma"). The Academy was established by papal bull as "Congregazione" in 1585, and became Academy in the Nineteenth Century. Nowadays it also has a Conservatory, what they call a "Bibliomediateca" and a Museum of musical instruments. Vinyl lovers will recall that the orchestra, though a concert outfit, was employed in dozens of famous operatic recordings in the 1950s and 1960s. Anyway, I can vouchsafe that in concert the Santa Cecilia was first-rate even in the Fifties, when I heard in Rome a wonderful evening with Previtali and the greatest pianist in my experience, Wilhelm Backhaus, who played both Beethoven´s Concerto Nº4 and Brahms´ First in the same evening! (February 6, 1954). And now to Sir Antonio Pappano (why Antonio and not Anthony? He´s British!). Born 56 years ago, he studied in the United States, he was Musical Director of the Norwegian Opera at Oslo and at Brussels´ Théâtre de la Monnaie prior to taking over the main post at London´s Covent Garden in 2002. So he divides his time between opera and concerts. The programmes he brought over for the Mozarteum´s two cycles played safe, too safe. On the tour came Beatrice Rana, a 23-year-old Italian pianist who recorded Tchaikovsky´s First Concerto and Prokofiev´s Second with Pappano and the Santa Cecilia. If she had played Prokofiev on Tuesday 12 and Tchaikovsky on Wednesday 13, it would have been much better, but no, it was Tchaikovsky both days. Or if the Russian composer´s Fifth Symphony on the 12th would have been replaced by a symphony of, say, Shostakovich, there would have been a good balance. But no, we had both Tchaikovskys together on the first night, and one hopes to hear something more varied from a visiting orchestra, especially if it´s their first time here. But apart from that caveat, everything went swimmingly. The conductor was right in starting both evenings with Verdi: the Overture to "La Forza del destino" and the following day, the Sinfonia (another name for overture) to "Luisa Miller". The phrasing was unfailing, showing Pappano´s knack for dramatic music, and the Orchestra sounded admirable (as listed in the hand programme it is huge, 117 players, but surely fewer came). Rana is a find: a fantastic and effortless technique that combines a big sound without harshness and impeccable digitation at all speeds. Just one reservation: in the first movement she slowed down too much in certain passages, though generally she dazzled in the virtuosic passages. The accompaniment was very professional. Her encore on Wednesday was beautiful: a Schumann song from "Frauenliebe und Leben" as arranged admirably by Liszt. But on Tuesday her Gigue from Bach´s First Partita sounded like a perfectly executed cross-hands etude rather than a dance. The symphonies showed both Pappano´s mettle and the orchestra´s quality; except for some horn fluffs the playing was very firm, with attractive solos from the woodwinds and the strings and a warm, in tune, brilliant overall sound. The conductor was orthodox and gave sure readings of both the Tchaikovsky Fifth and that strange and fascinating symphony, Saint-Saëns´ Nº3. The final minutes of the latter were thrilling; organist Daniele Rossi played on the Colón electric organ placed on the avant-scène loge and it sounded good, though never replacing a true pipe organ (impossible at the Colón). Encores: on Tuesday, "Nimrod" from Elgar´s Enigma Variations, and the last part of Rossini´s "Guillaume Tell". On Wednesday, a marvelous interpretation of Puccini´s Intermezzo from "Manon Lescaut" and a romping close with the galop-like ending to Ponchielli´s "Dance of the Hours" from "La Gioconda". Opera companies should always try to obtain a reasonable balance between the surefire, the moderately known and the novelty of whatever century. However, the Teatro Argentino has inherited Puccini´s "La Boheme" from the preceding tenure of Valeria Ambrosio; it was cancelled last year due to money restrictions, and the new Director, Martín Bauer, has honored the contracts with the stranded singers reprogramming that opera for this season. There was a significant change in this "Boheme": following an inclination of her own, Ambrosio, whose career has been attached to modern musical comedy rather than opera, had announced as producer Ricky Pashkus, a man identified with Cibrián´s projects for decades. But Bauer put the production in the hands of a veteran Argentine with a big operatic career in Europe and the Canary Islands: Mario Pontiggia. In fact, he was the one that presented in 2006 the final Colón Opera before it closed in 2006: the première of Mussorgsky´s complete original version of "Boris Godunov". Just two observations on the work itself, for anything else would be redundant in what is one of the five most popular operas. Curiously, Verdi´s "La Traviata" belongs to that select bunch, and both depict the same world of Parisian bohemians and kept women of the 1840s, for that´s when the books of respectively Henri Murger and Alexandre Dumas Fils were written. The other matter concerns the weather: the first three acts happen in crude Winter, but the librettists (otherwise witty and very able) put the action of Act II OUTSIDE the Café Momus, a square in the Latin Quarter, and no one seems aware of the cold in one of the most joyful and carefree acts in all opera... Pontiggia showed his professionalism in clever handling of the relationships between the characters and in the case of Act II of the logistics involving a very intricate mélange of people that change constantly (quite a challenge). But there were faults:a) The libretto states very clearly that we are witnessing the times of King Louis Philippe and of his minister François Guizot: the 1840s; but the producer gives an unequivocal proof of how far ahead he moved the action: in Act II we see a poster of a Dietrich-Cooper movie of 1936! Also, the Third Act happens at the Barrière d´Enfer, one of the numerous customs posts that existed in Paris before the reforms of Baron Haussmann, who during the reign of Napoleon III (1852-70) led a deep modernisation programme that among other things eliminated such posts.b) In Act II the big feast with clowns and a man on stilts evokes Carnival but we are in Christmas!c) Unnecessary innovations such as a second presence of the owner Benoît in the caper of the bohemians just before the tragic entry of Musetta (Act IV). There was a curious description of stage and costume design in the hand programme: Pontiggia did the "costumes adaptation" and María José Besozzi the "stage design adaptation", implying that both were based on pre-existing materials at the Argentino. Costumes: well-chosen from the Argentino´s splendid array. Stage designs: completely apposite to the necessities of each act: the two-level garret (Acts I and III), the square with Momus in the background, the Barrière (also two-level). Good lighting from Gabriel Lorenti. A point worth stressing is the amplitude of the Argentino´s stage, even wider than the Colón´s: this is the ideal for Act II, in which amidst the multitude in the last minutes paraded the military band (very good players from the orchestra). There were two casts; I saw the first and found it as positive as can be assembled locally, plus an interesting debut: the young Chilean Yaritza Véliz as Musetta. Daniela Tabernig grew gradually into her Mimì, well-sung though not very personal in the first two acts, but intensely dramatic in the last two, her lyric soprano expanding at climactic moments. Gustavo López Manzitti was once again our most reliable resident tenor: his Rodolfo was professional, powerful and personable (three "p" that define him). Young baritone Ricardo Crampton, after some apprentice years, is now ready for a firm career as a lyric baritone, with his fresh timbre, fine line and agreeable presence. And Véliz was a revelation: she has the sweet insinuating required voice for this coquette, she is musically accurate and plays the comedy well. The other bohemians were both individually and as partners of a group completely believable: Mario De Salvo, in excellent voice, as an assertive Schaunard, and Emiliano Bulacios (Colline) confirming that he is our most promising bass. Add Alberto Jáuregui Lorda as a Benoît well versed in the buffo manner and Víctor Castells as a dignified Alcindoro fooled by Musetta. Carlos Vieu showed again that he is equally at home conducting concerts and opera. With full support from an orchestra that keeps its high standard and from the first-rate two choirs (the adult under Hernán Sánchez Arteaga and the children led by Mónica Dagorret) this was a convincing and enjoyable Puccinian evening. The Argentino is going through a difficult period of labor demands (a soberly written complaint was read before the audience at the beginning) and also needs reparations in various parts of the huge building: there is a plan to do them in several years. If you look at their website, Regina Opera Company’s mission is twofold: “To bring great opera performances at reasonable prices to our Brooklyn neighbors,” and “to provide a showcase for singers to perform the standard operatic repertoire, primarily in the original language, in fully staged productions with orchestra.” According to these criteria, the company, appearing this spring with the New York Opera Fest, almost completely fulfilled its mission Saturday afternoon with their production of Manon Lescaut—they brought the experience of opera to a Brooklyn neighborhood, and they provided performance opportunities for artists. For these accomplishments, I admire the company. It’s not always easy to access live opera due to the costs and availability of the medium—the Met’s Live in HD initiative is another tactic, deployed by a much wealthier, established company. However, Regina Opera offers performances for very affordable prices, with simple, straightforward productions that earnestly seek to serve the music. Which is to say, the company produces community opera. And I mean that in the best sense of the word. While venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and BAM conceive of themselves as players on an international level, Regina Opera draws its energy from local interests and passions. Consequently, the company lacks a professional ethos, favoring instead a familiar, laid-back approach. And this notion of opera as a parochial, accessible practice is certainly a welcomed antidote to the toxic intersections of opera and class. As a critic, though, I would be doing the company a disservice by simply congratulating them on their objectives—however admirable those objectives may be—because Regina Opera advertises itself as a professional company, based in NYC. Within this rubric, the performance of Manon Lescaut, at the auditorium of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, was problematic in very fundamental ways, the most egregious being the overall poor intonation of the orchestra, conducted by Gregory Ortega. With the deep field of talent available in New York City, it’s difficult to understand how an orchestra can be so poorly prepared. To be clear, this was not a case of the strings veering sharp for a few bars—this was a performance that went out of tune on a global scale, practically every phrase marred by poor playing. In the wake of this troubling aspect, it’s difficult to judge a production that strived so genuinely to honor Puccini’s music. The opera, based on the novel by Abbé Prévost, charts the social, moral, and physical unraveling of a young 18th century woman in the arms of Des Grieux, a sexy nobleman. From her entrance in a square at Amiens, to the elegance of Paris, to the vast wasteland of America, Manon Lescaut, in its exploration of extremes, offers the somewhat sexist, cautionary tale of what happens to women who so easily succumb to passion. As such, it gives little traction for the audience to orient itself to Manon’s dilemma. Consequently, Manon presents an odd challenge for the singing actress—the character’s capricious behavior tends to confound our perceptions of her motivations. Indeed, manipulated and objectified by the men surrounding her, Manon is more often spoken about, or to, than given freedom to articulate her own sense of what her position is in within the narrative’s plot. Luckily, her two famous arias “In quelle trine morbide” and “Sola, perduta, abbandonata” allow the audience access to this obscured interiority. In the title role, Sabrina Palladino, was a serviceable, committed Manon, which brought a helpful, cohesive quality to the opera’s dramatic trajectory. Her voice, beautiful and rich in the middle and lower register, only faltered at the most extreme sections of the role. As her Des Grieux, Percy Martinez managed to get through the role without incident. However, his tenor sounded slightly lodged in the throat, and his singing rarely achieved gestures of bloom and ease, disguising stridency as passionate ardor. It was only during the final act, as the character’s desperation bubbled to the surface, that Martinez’s singing became potent and vital. The most vocally secure performance came from Nathan Matticks in the thankless role of Lescaut. The singer possessed a sonorous, full-voiced baritone, which he used effectually. However, while his singing indicated technical maturity, his acting remained one-dimensional—an aspect, perhaps, of the role’s reductive function within the plot. The rest of the cast provided inconspicuous support. Of special note were David Bailey as Edmondo, John Schenkel as Geronte di Ravoir, and Noelle Currie as the Madrigal Singer. And the chorus, sounding rich and well-rehearsed, provided a much-needed counterbalance to the orchestra’s poor intonation. Linda Lehr’s stage direction, perfunctory and uninspired, remained entirely within the confines of a traditional iteration. In contrast to the Met’s recent pointlessly anachronistic production, this conservatism was somewhat welcomed. However, marred by the musician’s poor playing, Puccini’s musical drama rarely took flight. While reflecting on these criticisms, I fear that Regina Opera may have a general misunderstanding of its value as an institution. Attending a production by the company was not at all like attending the Met. Neither was it like the more recent hipster opera startups (such as LoftOpera or Heartbeat Opera) that have been making waves. It was, instead, like participating in a true community event—informal, full of warmth, where everyone is on a first-name basis. Even local children were involved, serving as choristers and supers. This connectivity made me wonder if the criteria by which I judged the performance were a little skewed—like going to the town softball game and expecting Yankee Stadium. Regina Opera is not the Met, nor is it on par with the smaller companies that have recently cropped up around the city. The latter are professional companies that operate with a professional ethos. But, Regina Opera does offer something that I find lacking in those companies: opera performance as a local practice. And it is this orientation that I find most remarkable and, in some ways, most necessary. In my hometown, I grew up playing little-league baseball. In how many operas does the heroine drink poison and then go lengthily mad? Only Tsar’s Bride comes to mind. But also: In this opera, the baritone is fought over by two adoring women. That happens to tenors all the time—and, in Mozart, to basses—but a baritone? Add characters named Morna and Wortimer, and if you’re not in a Harry Potter adventure and singers are warbling coloratura, you know it must be an obscure bel canto masterpiece. But whose? Donizetti wrote seventy and, admit it, you only know twenty of them. Mercadante wrote almost as many and you know even fewer. Verdi? Ridiculous. Rossini? Absurd. The Ricci brothers? No, face it, we are dealing with Malvina di Scozia by Giovanni Pacini. It was Pacini’s sad fate to compose eighty operas in the shadow of better-known men. He couldn’t dry up. It was an addiction. He pissed melody. And opera houses kept coming to him for new ones. Once, around the time of Bellini’s I Puritani, Pacini got so discouraged he took the pledge, no more opera, and kept it for nearly five years. But one fatal sip of melody, and there it was: a new one, Saffo, staggering upon the stage, and two busy decades followed. When he died, in 1867, at the age of 72, he had just premiered two new ones and was at work on a third. Pacini was born in 1795, in Catania (like Bellini) to a roving theatrical family (like Rossini) that encouraged his youthful talent. He was eighteen when he wrote his first opera, but he didn’t achieve success until Rossini departed for Paris in 1824. All the young composers in Italy scrambled to occupy the empty throne, and Pacini was the first out of the gate, with Alessandro nell’ Indie and L’ultimo giorno di Pompeii. “I wrote them in the style of Rossini,” he would say later, “because that’s what audiences wanted to hear.” In time his style matured, adjusting to the Romantic Movement, to Bel Canto triumphant. To this much later era we owe Pacini’s masterpieces, Il fidanzato corso, Allan Cameron, Saffo and Medea. And there was a new one, sometimes two, nearly every year. Stella di Napoli. Il Saltimbanco. Il gioventu d’Enrico V. Lorenzino de’ Medici. Why is Pacini nearly forgotten, while Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti survive? The music is as pretty (Rossini said, “He’s the best tunesmith of us all … if he weren’t so lazy”) and the plots barely more ridiculous. (Try comprehending motivation in Carlo di Borgogna. Just try. But the score is irresistible.) He was known as the king of the cabaletta, and I defy anyone not to bounce to the stretta that ends Act II of Maria, regina d’Inghilterra. But he seems not to have cared about the librettos very much. They were words; he set them to music. It was the end of the scene, so the tension should rise: Harmony took care of that. He did not obsessively read foreign plays (as Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi did), homing in on the thrilling dramatic moment, nagging the librettist to tighten the situation. And he did not go to Paris (as Rossini, Meyerbeer, Donizetti, Mercadante and Verdi all did) to learn what changes had been made in musical drama, what could be done with verse and climax and concerted event. Worst, he never created a single perfect work, capable of holding the stage after the entire fashion for bel canto had vanished, that Barbiere, Lucia, Norma to get him through the tulgy wood of the reign of Wagner and Verismo. His wonderful strette vanished. His name was confused with Puccini or Piccinni. A sad end. Or was it the end? What has brought him back to the edge of public awareness is that the bel canto style of singing is once again studied and performed, and its performers and audiences are bored with the familiar works. At festivals like Martina Franco, Wildbad and Wexford, Pacini is once again a name to reckon with. Seven or eight of Pacini’s operas are available on disc (mostly thanks to Opera Rara, which has even issued a Pacini Rediscovered CD), though I’m not aware of anything on video. Pacini is on deck, full of fight, ready for his comeback. Can he pull it off and put it on? New York’s Vertical Player Repertory (VPR), usually based in Brooklyn but for this occasion, May 11 and 13, occupying Christ and St. Stephen’s Church on the Upper West Side, is giving Malvina di Scozia its first break in a century and a half. The opera premiered in Naples in 1851 and ran up a respectable twenty-four performances in less than two months. A revival misfired in Rio di Janeiro; another took place in Malta. And then it was gone. Pacini went right on composing other things for other folk. He might not even have noticed that Verdi’s Rigoletto and Traviata had just transformed opera. Malvina was ill-starred from the beginning; it is surprising it is as hardy as it is. The libretto was old, having premiered in 1835 as Persiani’s Ines de Castro. The censors in nervous Naples (there had been a revolt there, and everywhere else, in 1848), banned reference to any current European monarchy, so the Portuguese story had to be rearranged for tenth-century Scotland. (Bagpipes are requested for the court triumph scene.) The company’s leading tenor had absconded for reasons no longer recalled, so the opera had to be composed for a baritone hero. Pacini wrote the “other woman” role for a brilliant star contralto, and few later singers felt comfortable with it. Although bereft of an orchestra—the pianist, Doug Han, is first rate however, and manages to imply what no doubt were intriguing and atmospheric orchestral touches—the VPR production proved engrossing and attractive. The company has rounded up an able cast, a sizable chorus, surtitles for the eccentric action and Hans Schellevis, who created the performing edition, to conduct the performances. The surtitles were effective and even grammatical. All this can’t have been cheap, and is worthy of the attention lavished last week on Opera Orchestra’s resuscitation of Donizetti’s Parisina. But Parisina does have a clearer plot. Malvina (aka Ines de Castro) is the truelove of Arturo (Pedro), the fighting prince of Scotland (Portugal). They have had several children and hope to be married. Arturo thinks a good moment for the announcement has arrived since he has just won a victory over the Irish (Castile), but when he arrives at court, singing a battle song that is also a drinking song (why waste time?), his father, King Malcom [sic] (Alfonso IV), reveals that the Irish have agreed to peace on condition that Arturo marry the amorous Irish princess, Morna. Consternation ensues, enhanced by one Wortimer, an “advisor” secretly in love with Malvina, who has rejected him. He spills Arturo’s secrets and, later, kidnaps and murders Malvina’s children. He even poisons Malvina, just the king and Morna are getting to like the poor girl. Arturo revolts, the king dies, Malvina goes crazy, the curtain falls. What’s not to like? What Malvina has certainly got is melody, opportunity for florid display, and tense situations that erupt or work themselves out in concerted passages, notably a climactic septet. Everyone seemed a bit under the weather at the opening on Wednesday night, but they were soon rolling along. “It flows so smoothly, number into number, no interruptions!” enthused a friend. I rather thought that was due to a cool audience, uncertain when to applaud. (They let loose at the end.) There was singing worthy of applause, but the conductor and pianist went right on with things. Perhaps the rental of the space is to blame. A pretty soprano named Angela Leson, whose lower register was uncertain but who flowered in the high coloratura of the mad scene, sang the title role. She was rather undercut by the massive contralto of Karolina Pilou as the neglected Princess Morna. Pilou, singing despite a touch of flu, stopped the show with a huge double aria (over two octaves in range) and much flashy ornament, all this expressing her delight in her forthcoming nuptials before Arturo even comes in. It’s all downhill from there, but like any good Amneris, she seemed quite capable of stealing the whole show with her rage and reconciliation moments, and the duet between the two ladies, exploiting the contrasts of their voices (“Mira, O Morna” –that isn’t what it’s called but I couldn’t resist) was especially charming. It was so clear that Ben Bloomfield, as Prince Arturo, was invading tenor territory that some of the audience thought he was a tenor simply omitting his high notes and sounding unusually plummy in the lower ones. If Pacini had been more forward-looking, he would have prepared a tenor edition of this role, for the brindisi (the notes call it “a drinking song about war”) gave him a chance to display a gracious line which often seemed to imply high notes that a tenor would have been expected to insert. His entire performance seemed a contest between good baritone instincts and the sort of mindless passion we associate with the higher voice. To the pleasure of all, he kept his cool and was the stalwart background to movements with other singers. Bass Stephen Kirchgraber sang King Malcom with a somewhat woolly tone, acceptably holding his place in the concerted movements. Tenor Aram Tchobanian did all that could be expected in the underwritten role of Wortimer, and here I must register a protest, a “what were they thinking?” moment—for Pacini and for his highly professional librettist Salvatore Cammarano (who had made the same error in Luisa Miller for Verdi two years earlier). Vortimer is not just a stock villain or, rather, he need not be. He is malicious, bloody, horrible. And what does he get to sing, by way of explaining himself and his motivations? “O mia vendetta” is about the size of it, for Malvina’s perfectly natural snub. Mr. Tchobanian could do very little with this; Carlo Bergonzi could not have done much more. The role is absent without leave. Evocative as that name “Wortimer” is, we don’t know who he is or why he does what he does, which is the heart of the opera. As everyone else boils down to a nice guy troubled by reasons of state, that leaves Malvina as little more than an unfortunate series of events. Verdi and Donizetti wouldn’t have let this happen. Indeed, the producers (who, I should mention, were my dear friends Thea Cook, Pacini’s greatest fan, and Judith Barnes, creator of VPR) told me they’d found a tenor aria on the revenge theme in one of Pacini’s other operas—there must be two dozen appropriate numbers, right?—and were thinking of filling the plot hole with it and giving Mr. Tchobanian something to do, but the evening would have run into overtime. (I suspect some fun repeats were cut, too, for the same reason.) And you know Pacini would have wanted his show out there, on the boards, never mind motivation. Well, he would. But Malvina deserves a villain with cojones, and the libretto did not provide one. If you love bel canto, this was a memorable occasion and it will be repeated on Friday. You will certainly be hearing from Ms. Pilou and Mr. Bloomfield in the future, and Ms. Leson may learn how to warm up her lower voice better. It’s four blocks north of the Met. What can you lose?
